Avoiding Milk Protein
Reasons to Suspect a Food Allergy
Symptoms of a true food allergy can appear within minutes to a few hours of ingesting an allergen. The following may cause you to suspect that you are having a reaction:
- Itchy mouth and difficulty swallowing
- rash, hives, a flushed feeling
- indigestion, stomach cramps, vomiting, diarrhea
- sneezing and difficulty breathing
- lightheadedness, loss of consciousness
- anaphylaxis, a violent and deadly assault on two or more organ systems at once, often a combination of severe hives, closing of the airways, a sharp drop in blood pressure, and if not treated, death.
The following symptoms often accompany allergies:
- asthma
- chronic inflammation of the sinuses (sinusitis)
- chronic yeast or ear infections (otitis media)
- hives (urticaria)
- eczema and acne
In recent years and in particular among doctors who treat autism, the following have been identified as caused by allergy
- chronic fatigue
- mood swings
- cognitive problems (hyperactivity, ADHD, Autism)
- insomnia
- irritable bowel syndrome
The Odds
One of the best ways to corroborate your suspicions is to keep a journal, listing when foods are consumed and when symptoms are felt. Be aware that sometimes symptoms may not appear for several hours or days. There is no cure for food allergies, so treatment means life long avoidance and typically of high protein foods. It is best to treat a suspected food allergy only after clinical diagnosis by a doctor.
